Jakarta is a prime shopping destination South East Asia offering everything from high-end international designers in luxurious air-conditioned malls to hectic, great value local markets.
It is inevitable that you will be doing at least some of your shopping in one of the many malls here. Most shopping malls are designed with similar layouts. Go to the top floors for restaurants & cafes and children’s indoor play areas, the next floor down will probably have children’s clothes shops and toys, then clothing and other shops, with a food market in the basement.
There is also an emerging market for great, contemporary design by local designers.
For hardened shoppers or those who have to seek out necessary items, Jakarta has become a shopping destination. You can find everything from high designer goods to local handicrafts. For many Jakartans, spending the day in a mall is their main leisure activity. Malls offer everything from shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, children’s play centres, cinemas, spas and beauty salons and air-conditioning! if malls are not your thing, there are literally thousands of independent shops in Jakarta, many selling beautiful handmade goods.
